CHAPERONE ATTRIBUTES & RESPONSIBILITIES
For best student safety and experience, chaperones need to have attributes listed below. We thank all chaperones who apply, but your participation cannot be guaranteed. The chaperone team is built around the question: What's best for the safety, learning, and culture of all students? The ratio of adults to guide the preparations and go hiking is generally best at 2 adults for 8 hikers.

- Positive and supportive communication to students and parents is of utmost importance - establishing healthy and ongoing contact builds the crucial rapport, trust, and confidence
- Experience working on tasks with people in this age group; previous healthy past experiences,
- History of positive interactions, and connections made within the greater OKM learning community are very helpful to build trust and support amongst students, parents, teacher/organizers, and Lake O team.
- Ability to give instructions clearly and see that they are carried out while maintaining a positive and "professional" temperament
- Willingness and determination to never deviate from the assigned routes, or safety procedures/systems. If there is an emergency, you would make every effort to contact a teacher, and/or a Parks ranger to advise.
- Willingness and determination to attend all Lake O’Hara meetings, see that other group members attend meetings, pass on all information in a timely manner, provide necessary liaison between group leaders and overall trip planners, assist in group planning, and insure that group members prepare food, clothing, and equipment and get themselves in shape for the trip.
- Adequate level of physical and mental preparedness (we may require that group leaders provide a doctor’s permission to take part).
- Experience in back country hiking, packing, and camping.
- Guaranteed availability of the dates of the trip, and a firm commitment to see the trip through to the very end, which means returning to OKM with the rest of us.
- Understand the risks involved with the trip and always place the safety of every individual in your group at the highest priority.
- Willingness not to smoke or consume alcohol at any time while on the trip.
- Must complete a Criminal Record Check
- Fairly recent successful camping and hiking experience in our National Parks
- A trustworthy support vehicle is helpful
- First aid training
