Egypt Lakes - Banff National Park
The Egypt Lake trails are located in Banff National Park. Approximately 38 km (depending on your route). Access Points are Sunshine Village Ski Area, Red Earth Creek and Twin Lakes (access from Vista Lake viewpoint off of Hwy 93 S). Depending on your route, you will get to see spectacular views from Whistling Pass, Ball Point Junction, Simpson Pass, Healy Pass, and/or Gibbon Pass. No matter which route you are on, you are guaranteed to see beautiful lakes, glaciers and mountain ranges.
There are a variety of access points and campgrounds along this route. Each campground has tent pads, outhouses, picnic tables and food storage cables or lockers.
Some groups (not all) will have the opportunity to stay in the Egypt Lake Shelter for a night on their trip. Here are a few things to consider if you are staying in the shelter:
There are a variety of access points and campgrounds along this route. Each campground has tent pads, outhouses, picnic tables and food storage cables or lockers.
- Use only the designated tent pads
- All food must be suspended when not in use
- Prepare meals in the designated cooking area
- Pack out all garbage, including food waste
- Dispose of grey water well away from water sources and campsites
- Campfires allowed only where fireboxes are provided
- Use provided outhouses - if not possible dig a hole away from the trail
- Do not remove anything from the park (rocks, fossils, flowers, antlers…)
- Do not leave your ‘mark', even if others have. Carving and jiffy marker evidence of you or your group will result in consequences.
Some groups (not all) will have the opportunity to stay in the Egypt Lake Shelter for a night on their trip. Here are a few things to consider if you are staying in the shelter:
- No more than one group should stay there each evening. Refer to the matrix for this information.
- There is a wood stove inside the shelter, please chop and replace at least the amount of wood you use (axe and wood provided at the shelter)
- It is possible that you will be sharing the shelter with other people. It is of the utmost importance that you are friendly and respectful, this includes keeping your own (and your groups) gear organized and tidy.
- Leave the shelter cleaner than when you found it.
