CHAPERONE Information
Each chaperone will guide their hiking team to ensure all of their group is well informed, well prepared, supported, and able to take on the hikes. OKM Staff will support chaperones in all preparations.

CHAPERONE ATTRIBUTES & RESPONSIBILITIES
For best student safety and experience, chaperones must give support as follows:

- Positive and supportive communication with students and parents is of utmost importance - establishing healthy and ongoing contact builds the crucial rapport, trust, and confidence.
- Ability to give instructions clearly and see that they are carried out while maintaining a positive and "professional" temperament
- Willingness and determination to never deviate from the assigned routes, or safety procedures/systems. If there is an emergency, you would make every effort to contact a teacher, and/or a Parks ranger to advise.
- Willingness and determination to attend all Lake O’Hara meetings, see that other group members attend meetings, pass on all information in a timely manner, provide necessary liaison between group leaders and overall trip planners, assist in group planning, and insure that group members prepare food, clothing, and equipment and get themselves in shape for the trip.
- Adequate level of physical and mental preparedness (we may require that group leaders provide a doctor’s permission to take part).
- Experience in back country hiking, packing, and camping is an asset.
- Guaranteed availability of the dates of the trip, and a firm commitment to see the trip through to the very end
- Understand the risks involved with the trip and always place the safety of every individual in your group at the highest priority.
- Willingness not to smoke or consume alcohol at any time while on the trip.
- Must be willing to lead 4 local practice hikes between April & June (if you are planning a through route, at least one hike should include an overnight)
- Must complete a Criminal Record Check
- At least one chaperone per group must have First aid training
