LAKE O'HARA PLANNING ITINERARY: SUBJECT TO CHANGES - YOUR CHAPERONE WILL CONFIRM ALL ROUTES
The Rockwall - Group 5
Day 1 - Sunday: Meet your group in the OKM parking lot bright and early to board your assigned bus. Gear will be stored in chaperone support vehicles and you will only need your jacket and bagged lunch on the bus. First stop will be a bathroom break in Sicamous. From there we will travel to the Roger’s Pass Visitor Information Center for a safety presentation. From here it is approximately 2 hours to the Lake Louise Campground on Hwy 1. After arriving at Lake Louise, you will set up your camp, enjoy your car camping meal and prepare to set off on your through hike tomorrow morning. If you have time, your group can night hike up to Lake Louise via the Louise Creek Trail (6km return).
Day 2 - Monday: Up early and on your assigned bus by 8:00 a.m. Your bus will drop off Group 6 at Paint Pots before dropping your group off at Flow Lake. Your support vehicles will be left in the parking lot. Start hiking immediately as it will be a fairly long day - appx. 10 km/700 m elevation gain. You will start meandering through burnt out pine forest, but then the trail is all uphill. Hike to the Floe Lake Campground (#12) and set up your tents.
Day 3 - Tuesday: Hike from Floe Lake through Numa Pass to the Numa Creek campsite (#11) - appx. 10 km/315 m elevation gain. This is fabulous hike -- take pictures of Floe Lake on your way up to the Pass - don't forget to look behind you. Hike approximately 3.5 kms following the yellow markers to the summit of the pass. The trail can be covered in snow so follow these instructions if this is so. At the summit of the pass there is a rock cairn. From the summit hug the left shoulder for approximately 250m to another yellow marker. From there turn straight down the slope and into the second finger of larch trees. You should pick up the trenched trail and then continue down for the next 10 km to Numa Creek Campsite. Numa Creek Campsite is one of the coziest campsites in the entire area so enjoy camping right beside the creek. Be sure to put all your packs up the bear pole at night.
Day 4 - Wednesday: From Numa Creek Campsite (#11), hike Tumbling Creek via Tumbling Pass - appx. 6.6 km/715 m elevation gain. The Trailhead for Tumbling Pass is about 400m down the river from the eating area at Numa Creek Campsite. This is another fabulous day especially when you are hiking through Tumbling Pass with the Tumbling Glacier off your left shoulder, hanging precariously on the cirque basin of Mount Gray. You will be passing your ‘sister’ group at some point today. Take some time to swap stories and tips for the remainder of the trail. Your group will be staying in the Tumbling Creek Campground (#10b). Remember that there is to be absolutely no open fires in this camping area.
Day 5 - Thursday: This is going to be a long day, so it will be very important to get going early. You will be traveling from Tumbling Creek Campsite to the Helmut Creek Campground (#6) over the Rockwall Pass - appx. 12.3 km/700 m elevation gain. A good place to have lunch is at the little lake about half way (check this out on your map). This is probably one of the only places where water is running in sufficient quantities to fill you water bottles with ease. Enjoy spectacular views of the towering ‘Rock Wall’ today!
Day 6 - Friday: Get up early today - you have a long hime out! Hike towards the Helmut-Ochre Campsite (#4) and continue on to the Paint Pots Parking Lot - appx. 14.3 km where you will meet your assigned by. Your bus is expecting you at the parking lot by 11:00 am.
We will rendezvous at Roger’s Pass Monument (Time TBA) with all the other groups. A group picture will be taken here. Then we will proceed to Revelstoke for a lunch break at the fast food strip on the left-hand side of the highway at the main intersection.
Let your parents know once you have an idea when you will be home so they can arrange for you to be picked up (usually around dinner time).
